How To Pick The PERFECT Red Lipstick

Red; the colour of passion, is arguably the sexiest colour around. With so many different shades of red, it can be an extremely daunting task to pick the right one, because it is true, certain reds suit some people better than others.

Here are a few tips for a better lipstick application before finding the best red for you.

Apply lip balm first. This will moisten your lips. Do this particularly if you are going to wear a matte lipstick, as the matte formula is not forgiving on dry or cracked lips. Wait a few minutes before applying your lipstick.

When choosing a bold red, outline your lips with a lip pencil first for a crisp, defined look.

For more control on your application, use a lip brush instead of applying straight from the tube.

Bold Orange Red
A bold orange will suit someone with dark chocolate hair and bright blue eyes. A sheer gloss in this colour works well for someone with fairer hair and complexion. Kevyn Aucoin Expert Lip Color in Micavel has amazing pigment and a long lasting formula that we absolutely love.

Berry Red
A berry red looks gorgeous on someone with blonde hair and a yellow or olive skin tone. It provides a contrast and really pops.  We suggest Bite’s Cashmere Lip Cream in Sancerre.

Deep Maroon (Wine) Red
This shade of red looks beautiful on darker complexions. You can keep your eye makeup to a minimum and really make your lips the focal point. We recommend Rouge D’Armani lipstick in 609.

Bright Red
Bright Red lips are amazing for dark hair and warm skin tones. We suggest lining your lips with a colour like Bare Minerals Marvellous Moxie Lip Liner in Amped before applying your lipstick. Anyone with green or hazel eyes will notice how much their colour pops with this lipstick. We love Rouge Dior Lipstick in Rouge Cannage.

Gloss in Light Rosy Red
If you have small lips, we suggest keeping the colours light and glossy. This makes the lips appear more plump. This is the same if your lips are not your favourite feature, you can play up your eyes and keep your lips light and less in focus. Rosy red shades are especially flattering for green and brown eyes, as well as someone with fair or medium skin. We love Nyx Mega Shine Lip Gloss in Tea Rose.

Balm in Orange Red
If you prefer a natural look, and don’t like the drama of a bold lip, a lip balm is a great alternative to compliment your colouring, while still feeling comfortable with what you are wearing. Reds that lean towards orange will be really pretty for blue eyes. An easy trick is to mix your lipstick with a balm and then apply with a brush. Match it with a coral blush and you’ll see your eyes sparkle. Our favourite lip balm is from the brand Lip Shit and comes in a variety of flavours.

Much Love & Success,

Jennifer 💕
